Buying and selling
I look at real estate and shop around kind of compulsively. Even though I'm not currently in the market for property, I'm still interested in what the market looks like. Call it my inheritance... Dad was always talking shop at home, so now I'm keeping tabs on the real estate market in my neck of the woods.

Smoke Detector Batteries
About six months after we moved into our new new house we were awakened one night at about 3AM by a voice yelling "Fire! Fire!" alternating with the bleating of a smoke alarm. No smoke, no fire, all clear, go back to bed. This scenario repeated itself several times over the next few months until we finally figured out that we should replace the 9v backup batteries in the damned things.
We have faithfully replaced the batteries every year since then (one year we had a 4-day power outage which put a significant strain on the batteries) but it has occurred to us that we might not need to do this every single year. Since we don't have any other devices that use 9v batteries, we simply discard the batteries that we take out of the detectors. This seems wasteful at best...
